10 Tips for Increasing Effectiveness of Workplace Safety Communication

The need for effective workplace safety communication has never been greater. With up to five generations working (from Boomers to Gen Z), and more cultural diversity than ever, it's important to continue to find ways to keep the importance and relevancy of safety to workers top of mind.

Here are 10 Tips for increasing the effectiveness of your workplace safety communication:

  • Be mindful of the make up (culture,age, etc.) of your employees.
  • Explain the safety steps logically and chronologically.
  • Use channels of communication that will be most effective for each audience.
  • Ask questions and repeat content to confirm messages are understood.
  • Use visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches to maximize comprehensive.
  • Use a test group when conducting training to ensure you messages are on track.
  • Use familiar words that they can understand; avoid jargon and figures of speech.
  • Be open to feedback, questions and concerns.
  • Translate key messages as needed. Communicating in the worker's native language will increase comprehension and also trust!
  • Check-in regularly.
